There are two main rail networks: the central and the southern railroad. Lima is not connected to Cusco by rail. The train stations are a dangerous place to be at night, therefore travelers are advised to go by day only. The Central Railroad links Lima with La Oroya, Huancayo, and Huancavelica. The Southern Railroad runs from Aerequipa through Juliaca to Puno on Lake Titicaca, where there is a weekly connection by steamer across the lake to Bolivia. At Juliaca, there is a branch line to Cusco.
There are two daily trains from Tacna to Arica (Chile).
Road
The main international highway is the Pan-American Highway which runs north/south along the coastal desert. TEPSA operate Greyhound-like buses from Ecuador through Peru to Chile. Buses are a cheap and popular means of getting around.
Other than the main highways, few roads in Peru are paved, and landslidescommonly occur. The Peruvian Touring Club can make things easier by offering maps and preparing itineraries for the main regions.
